5 Self Health Tips for Empaths

Are you sensitive to other people’s emotions? Does being in a crowd emotionally drain you? Is it hard to separate your emotions from others? An empath is a person super aware of the emotions of those around them, and often absorb those feelings like a sponge. Being empathetic is a wonderful trait, and helps us connect to one another and understand our fellow humans. But many empaths struggle with their own mental health as a result of their hyper-awareness.

Here are 5 tips to maintain your mental health in our emotionally-charged society.

1. Find comfort in time alone

Many empaths stretch themselves thin by staying connected to the world around them. But, for your own mental health, it is important to routinely detach so you can focus on yourself rather than those around you. A great way to disconnect to reconnect is:

  • Meditate
  • Take a walk through nature
  • Journal

2. Set boundaries

It can be hard to say “no” but this step is one of the most important when it comes to maintaining your mental health. Some people are emotionally draining, think of the people in your life that leech at your energy, and think of healthy ways to distance yourself from them. No, you don’t need to stop seeing them completely, but you’ll have a better relationship if you set boundaries and give yourself time to rebound.

3. Share your own emotions

Whether with a counselor of a trusted friend/ family member, remember that you’re allowed to unleash some of your own emotional burdens. Your loved ones will appreciate you opening up to them.

4. Take care of your body

It’s no secret that our physical health greatly impacts our emotional health. As an empath, give yourself leverage for the extra mental work you have to do by taking care of your body. You can do this by:

  • Eating lots of fruits and vegetables
  • Drinking lots of water
  • Getting a good night’s sleep

5. Prioritize yourself

The most important on this list, put yourself first. You can get lost by putting others’ emotions above your own, and often do. Realize that you are worth prioritizing and try every day to give yourself a break.
